Tactics Talk - Anticipating Objectives

Defining Objectives

Victory in CO2 requires the player to achieve objectives. Outside of destroying the enemy you must attempt to secure key areas on the map indicated by a blue and grey square with a green outline. If you select this icon a yellow perimeter outline appears which indicates the area you must be inside of. The icons on the map only display active objectives. Current objectives, along with archived (past) and inactive (future) ones, can be viewed in the Objectives (OBJ) dialog box.

From the Objectives section of the Game Manual, pg. 154

Completion and Occupation

Here I will simply quote the Game Manual: "There are two ways to get VP for achieving an objective. Some objectives will require you only to achieve them by the time they end; the points you get for this are called Completion VPs.....Other objectives will require you to gain and maintain control of them from the start to the end time to get the maximum points available. This kind of points are called Occupation VPs and you will get a proportion of them for each minute you control the objective between its start and end times."

How to identify objective types, start/end time, VP value, and progress (pg. 155-158)

Maximum Occupation

Time matters less for completion objectives. If you take them by the "To" time, you get the VPs. Occupation objectives, on the other hand, require you to have a unit in them for the entire period of time (for max VPs). In this case you must anticipate the objective, meaning you must have a unit there before the time starts.

For instances, lets take a look at the battle map from D3 0700 of my The Costly Clipper AAR

Do you see that little artillery unit up north? He is on a grand adventure to Hoven.

But there is no objective. Not yet anyway. Hoven is greyed out in the OBJ dialog box and has a start time of D4, 1200. I am moving my unit forward knowing that I will need someone within the permitter at the start time. I typically do this with support units like artillery or HHQs as to limit the impact on lower echelon units. However, sometimes I will have a unit attack from this location. That way the headquarters, mortars, and/or reserves will remain in place at the FUP (form up point) for an extended amount of time.

The artillery regiment is scheduled to arrive in time to begin collecting 3.3 VPs
